Mokopane (previously known as Potgietersrus) is a mining and agricultural center. There are several nature reserves in the vicinity. Among them, the Potgietersrus Nature Reserve supports indigenous and exotic game, and is maintained by the National Zoological Gardens as a game breeding center. The Mokopane area is one of South Africa's richest agricultural areas producing wheat, cottan, beef, maize, peanuts and citrus fruits. The Arend Dieperink Museum has a fine cultural-historical collection. In the district, the Makapansgat Caves are notable for their fossils. Annual Event: Potgietersrus Show in March and the Biltong Festival in October.
